Everything changes now that summer is on the doorstep. Suddenly, after months of bundling and planning and setting up playdates, we can leave the house with nothing more than a sun hat and pocket change for popsicles and make an afternoon of it! If you take the Little Paper with you, turn to pages 48 and 49 and you’ll find the definitive guide to our city’s parks, pool and playgrounds.
You can spend Monday reading up at your local wading pool and then take off for the week to explore another part of the city. Visit the Trinity Bellwoods Farmer’s Market on a Tuesday afternoon, splash in the wading pool before wandering over to Chippy’s and exploring local shops like Token, Ella & Elliot and Polka Dot Kids with an order of french fries and garlic mayo in your stroller’s cup holder. Make a pizza and get muddy in the sand pit with your toddler at Dufferin Grove on Wednesday and then happen upon story-telling in the yurt or just pull a boat on a string around the wading pool. Thursday offers the chance to join Jennie Lea for song and dance in Kew Gardens, hang off the monkey bars and then walk over to Ed’s Ice Cream for a treat.
Slip onto the ferry on Friday afternoon and explore the islands before settling into Twilight Storytime at Franklin’s Children’s Garden. A day throwing rocks into Grenadier Pond and braving the High Park pool waterslide will pretty much guarantee a sleepy child in your arms while you take in Shakespeare in The Park on a starlit Saturday night and on Sunday, you can spread out a blanket and a picnic in the shade at Spadina House and play hide and seek in the garden while the performers warm up for their weekly concert.
Closer to home, you’ll find lots to do in your Neighbourhood section – there’s the Slobberfest in Woodbine Park, a chicken BBQ and square dance at Manor Road Church and a swimming pool full of fish for the catching at Scadding Court (it’s 75 cents extra if you want your fish cleaned for you.) You’ll also find profiles of three local dads and the children who adore them.
We want to wish a very happy Father’s Day to all the dads in our children’s lives (and in our own too!) It’s brief and wonderful, our Toronto summer and we hope The Little Paper helps you and your family make it your best yet – Vicki
