Little City

The Monkey Bunch kicks off the 2nd Annual Family Series at the Drake this Sunday. Skip the Superbowl and shake it with your kids instead!

Welcome to the weekend!

October 2007

We are city parents – and we are grateful, in this month of thanksgiving, to raise our children in an incredible collection of urban villages, in a place where a streetcar ride can take us through a dozen cultures and as many languages, where the experience of art, music, technology, theatre and history are like a birthright.
Ours is also a city of trees and parks and beaches – we can spend the morning picking up chestnuts and collecting shiny red maple leaves for pressing and then take the subway to the new drop-in at the ROM, catch a children’s author reading down the street at Type, split a bowl of steaming noodles on Spadina or a plate of perogies on Roncesvalles. Slide open the streetcar window and maybe you’ll catch the scent of burning leaves on the wind, see a raccoon scurry up a tree, pick up the fading strains of a busker’s guitar and marvel at the myriad ways this city surprises us and our children.

On the list at our house this month... the Sorauren Pumpkin Parade, the Harvest Family Fun Day at the Brickworks, floating a pumpkin in the High Park wading pool at twilight, taking a drive to pick the last crisp apples of the year and sharing stories and smiles with our neighbours as we gather on our porches again with bowls full of candy and hearts full of thanks – Vicki
