Kiviuq Returns | An Inuit Epic

Sunday, January 20

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:00am on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, repeating until Sunday, January 27, 2019

Direct from Iqaluit

Journeying across the vast expanse of the Arctic, beset by treacherous creatures wreaking havoc on his world, Kiviuq gathers strength from his ancestors and spirit guides as he defends his people and fights his way home. Music, drumming, dance, and storytelling combine in this thrillingly modern evocation of the legendary figure of Kiviuq: hero, seeker, wanderer. Kiviuq Returns is performed entirely in Inuktitut, with English overviews of the Inuit epic stories provided in the programme and on Tarragon’s website. Before the play begins, there is also an English explanation of the importance of Inuktitut to Canadian theatre.

A creative-collection performance from Nunavut based on the legends of the Inuit hero Kiviuq, as remembered and shared by Inuit elders:

Audiences for Kiviuq Returns: An Inuit Epic can expect a more relaxed experience. People are welcome to come and go as needed. Vocalizations and other sounds from the audience are welcome (i.e. babies crying). A very low level house light will remain on the audience during the performance.
