Karen picks up her copy of the Little Paper at Scooter Girl on Roncesvalles or at the High Park Library. A benefit of being the youngest in the family is that her son gets to enjoy his sister’s past costumes. This year Karen’s boy will be a frog, while his sister anticipates being a princess bride. Aside from getting into the holiday by decorating the house and dressing up, Karen’s son enjoys playing Halloween games, particularly ones that involve flashlights! Karen says that their family feels a real sense of community in their neighborhood and as a result there are many, many Halloween related activities they can take part in that are hosted by local dropin centers, libraries and schools. A family and neighborhood favourite is the annual “Pumpkin Parade” in Sorauren Park. The night after Halloween, everyone in the neighborhood brings their jack-o’-lantern to the park to line up along the track that runs around the park. The kids love to walk and look at each lit face, compare styles, size and shapes and count all the pumpkins. Of course, they also take great pride in their pumpkin being part of the display! This year the kids are at the age where they will be able to go up to the houses together trick or treating while their parents wait on the sidewalk keeping a close eye on them. They are very excited and look forward to sharing their Coffee Crisps and Kit Kats with their mom and dad!
