Victoria Day Fireworks 2017 | A Primer

The fireworks will begin at 9:45pm, set off from a barge in Ashbridges Bay. They’re visible from the Bay as well as from Woodbine, Kew and Balmy beaches so you’ve got your pick tor a picnic dinner. We haven’t tested it but we’ve heard that there’s a decent view and smaller crowds at the RC Harris Water Treatment lawns and Cherry Beach as well.

Down at the Beach, parking and traffic will be a challenge this Monday but the 501 will get you there eventually. Alternatively, you can pop on the bike trailer and hit The Trail.

Rock stacking, stone-skipping, castle-building, frisbee-flipping, dog-watching and lawn-bowling are just a few of high-tech amusements we suggest prior to the big show. There’s a playground in Kew Gardens on the other side of the boardwalk as well. You’ll find washrooms at the western perimeter of Kew Beach and the east end of Balmy Beach. Worth visiting is the iconic Leuty Lifesaving Station completed in 1920.

Just past the station, there’s a bright, clean snack bar with gelato (the brownies are pretty nice too) and a permanent food truck with dogs and fries if haven’t come packing your own picnic.

There are any number of cafés and restaurants in te neighbourhood but Ed’s Real Scoop at Beech and Queen is a crowd-pleaser and we love the lattés at Oscars.
