The Christmas Story is one of Toronto’s oldest and best-loved holiday traditions.
First staged here in 1938, this pageant began in St. Martin-in-the-Fields church in London, England in 1928. Queen Elizabeth and her sister Margaret were taken to see it when they were little girls.
The story of the Nativity is told through a series of narrated scenes linked by beautiful organ music and carols from an unseen choir. Close to 100 volunteers, including babies who take turns playing the role of baby Jesus, perform in one of two casts.
There is no enrollment fee to participate in The Christmas Story, however, parents must commit to contributing 15 hours of volunteer supervision time, as well as covering the cost for record checks as required by Anglican Church policy.
Children perform as shepherds, angels or kings’ attendants. Two complete casts alternate rehearsals and performances. There are no speaking lines to learn, as the production is narrated. Costumes and make-up are provided.
There are currently openings in both casts.
Children are involved in a maximum of 5 rehearsals and 6 performances:
Rehearsals take place on Sunday afternoons, November 10th, 24th and December 1st at 1 pm OR 3:30 pm.
There are two evening rehearsals either Monday, November 25th and Monday, December 2nd OR Wednesday, November 27th and Wednesday, December 4th at 6:15 pm.
Performances run December 6 – 8, 13 – 15 & 20 – 22.
Occasional absences can be accommodated with advance notice.
