The Little Paper supports the teachers who are fighting for small class sizes and a world-class education system and we want to help families find programming for their children. If you know of a strike or solidarity camp we’ve missed, please let us know so we can grow this list together.

If you are able to spend the day with your children, here’s a list of family-friendly events during the day on Friday, February 21st.

Strike Camps

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

Maker Bean Café
Your child will spend a fun day meeting new friends & learning tech skills such as laser cutters, 3D printers & wood-working tools, to create something straight out of their imaginations! Kids will work on a full-day project, with at least 45 minutes of outdoor time at Dufferin Grove Park (5-minute walk from The Maker Bean on Bloor)

Idea Incubator Camp at Maker Kids
Just a few spots left in our award-winning Idea Incubator camp during the upcoming school closures. Kids will learn core STEM topics: Coding, Robotics & Minecraft. They’ll also take healthy breaks including a trip to the park and other fun offscreen games & activities!

The Ontario Science Centre
Children will make new friends, explore the exhibit halls and take part in hands-on science activities at our full-day program. These special program days will offer Extended Care at no extra charge.

Explorer Hop
A fun day where kids will learn Robotics, Art, Engineering, Entrepreneurship and so much more!

Little Robot Friends
LRF offers Strike Day Camps with different lessons and activities on both of these days. There are 13 spots available

Code Ninjas
Code Ninjas Vaughan will be running a Strike Day Camp with a number of fun and engaging activities, including game-building and off-screen STEM activities.

Video Camp at Back Lane Studios
An opportunity for children to learn documentary techniques and actually make a 1-3 minute video. Your child in a small crew will create a fun documentary with high production values about Laneway Life in Roncesvalles Village. Cameras and editing suites are on site.

ThriveKids
ThriveKids programs include vigorous exercise, STEAM  (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), outdoor exploration, life skills, mindfulness, Food is Fuel™, and more.

Neilson Park Creative Centre
NPCC has organized a creative day camp focusing on creating visual arts projects throughout the day, using a mixed-media approach combining painting and drawing with collage! In addition to arts activities, children will be playing games and participating in recreational activities in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Arts & Crafts

Create Art Studio
Our Strike Camps feature age-appropriate lessons in math, science, and literacy… taught through art! Kids have so much fun, they don’t even realize they’re learning.

The Little Artist
Art Days are available for school-aged children who are interested in the visual arts. A pizza lunch and nut-free snacks are provided in the cost for each child.

Messy Pants
Share some laughs and artwork with projects using acrylic paint, watercolours, paper crafts, clay sculptures, slime and more!

A fun and colourful day of mixed media art!

Clay with Me
Kids will love allowing their imaginations and creativity out. Students will be encouraged to explore the whole creative process while learning new skills and making their own creations come to life before their eyes. Kids will get to spend time on a real potter’s wheel and playing with clay all day.

Day at the Gallery
Developed to provide meaningful engagement for children during the upcoming school service interruptions, this program combines art studio activities and gallery visits with healthy outdoor hikes and games.

Sports & Active Play

PickleHeadz
Two exciting days of snow football, soccer, & baseball, as well as traditional camp games like birthday party, zombie tag, capture the flag, and more. Make cool toboggan paths, snow forts, and of course snowmen. Inside the heated clubhouse, kids can participate in arts & crafts, Lego, bracelet making, board games, and much more.

Bob Acton Sports
A full-day multi-sport camp for the duration of the teacher’s job action. Free pizza and three hours of ice time!

Impact Skate Club
Skate and Create! Following the format of Impact’s PA Day camps, Strike Camp consists of group lessons, team-building games, art projects, music, and more!

A full-day program with outdoor time at Maple Claire park. There isn’t very much about TDot’s program online aside from an Instagram post – thank you to parent Daniella B. for this info. You can call TDot at 647-913-0643 for details.

Nature

Nature Camp Drop-In at Downsview
A free morning of programming for the whole family. Visit the campfire to roast marshmallows and explore the forest in our Nature Play program. We recommend people wear layers to dress for the weather. Please note: This is a drop-in, not a drop-off program. The parent and/or guardian must be in attendance at the program.

Bring your kids to the Nature Centre and get ‘em outside! Kids will be exploring outdoors, making crafts and learning about nature.

Theatre, Circus & Dance

Electric Moon Theatre Company
Electric Moon is partnering with CharActors Theatre Troupe to run a theatre camp during the ETFO strike days.

Children will get to try all of Cirque-ability’s usual aerial & acrobatic camp activities including tumble track, silks, trapeze, hoop, tumbling, crafts and more.

Sign up for a full-day creative arts workshop in Roncesvalles United Church has a Creative Arts Workshop.

Roseneath Theatre
With the Teachers Job Action affecting school across the province, Roseneath is offering parents and kids a space for extra learning and fun. Campers will have fun crafting, sharing their favourite stories, playing drama games, and more!

SparxStudio
Sign up for a day of education, creativity and fun! Each day will offer educational acting lessons and activities based on a daily theme! In addition to learning about social-emotional skills such as how to cope with bullying, anxiety and public safety, children will learn valuable acting techniques that will help increase their confidence, imagination, emotional intelligence and appreciation.

Martha Hicks School of Ballet
MHSB’s Friday camp includes different activities such as ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, musical theatre as well as arts and crafts.

Young People’s Theatre
Register for a full day of fun with drama exercises led by experienced artist-educators. Participants will share what they’ve been working on with parents and guardians at 3pm each day.

History & Culture

Pop Up: Kids in the Kitchen at Montgomery’s Inn
This one day camp for kids ages 6 to 12 will provide high-quality child care in a unique historic setting. Activities will include crafts, cooking activities, a tour of the museum, story-time & scavenger hunts. Kids make their own pizza to cook in the wood-burning oven. This event is part of Toronto History Museum Camp Programming.

Pop Up: Super Fun Day Camp at Scarborough Museum

Pop Up Camp: A Day in the Life of the Garrison
Children aged 6 to 12 can spend the day at Fort York National Historic Site, in the heart of downtown Toronto. Discover what life was like in an authentic War of 1812-era fort. Hands-on activities will include “falling in” for soldiers’ drill, cooking in our historic kitchen, learning about 19th-century music, and playing historic games. This event is part of Toronto History Museum Camp Programming.

ROMKids
The ROM is offering ROMKids Day Camp on Friday, February 21 for children ages 5 to 14. This full-day program will provide children with age-appropriate programming, hands-on engaging activities and the opportunity to explore the Museum’s fascinating galleries of art, culture and nature. This program offers parents a professionally supervised option for kids to learn and have fun.

Toronto Zoo
Send your kid to camp on their time off from school! Children will tour the Zoo, enjoy a behind-the-scenes encounter, animal-themed activities, games, and more!

The Leaside and Swansea sites will host a strike camp where children will have a fun day exploring animals, science and nature!

Common Threads
For those needing care during the teachers’ strike, Common Threads have a fun-filled day of sewing and baking projects plus some outdoor playtime.

ThreadHeads at Fairlawn
Join Jessica for a morning of sewing fun! Participants will make their own very useful one-of-a-kind drawstring bags. Hand sewing, applique and embroidery skills will be focused on. All materials and a healthy snack provided.

Multi-Discipline

Adventure Valley
An exciting day of activities that mix in nature, art, cooking, music, dance, sports and outdoor fun. Be sure to pack weather-appropriate clothing for the outdoors!

Students will spend the morning engaged in specially planned Project Based Learning activities that tie in academic and curriculum expectations. Each day will be based around a theme, including topics like science, history, culture, the arts, and more!

Join friends and neighbours for a free, fun-filled day with activities run by childcare providers and parent volunteers.

You could also choose to spend the day with other concerned Ontario families supporting well-funded public education at All out for Kids. Meet at the Legislature buildings at 11am on the 21st.

Compensation for Parents

The Ministry of Education is providing financial support to parents to assist with costs incurring during the labour disruption. Families are eligible as follows:

  • $60 per day per child up to six years old who aren’t enrolled in school but attend a school-based daycare that’s closed by a strike.
  • $40 for kindergarten students.
  • $25 for students in grades 1 to 7.
  • $40 per day for families of children with special needs, from kindergarten to grade 12.

Parents must register online for each child here to apply for compensation.

In addition, most program providers will refund or give credit for camps that don’t go ahead should the situation change.
